CANCER FIGHTING FOODS
Papaya
Papayas contain the phytochemical lycopene, the same cancer fighter found in tomatoes. But papaya has another cancer fighter, the cartenoid beta-cyrptoxanthin. Carotenoids fight free radicals, helping protect cells and membranes against damage and disease. Studies have shown that eating 1 or more papayas a week can lower your cervical cancer risk.

Shrimp
Shrimp are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which starve tumor cells and help fight cancer. Studies show that eating 8 or 9 shrimp a day can reduce your breast cancer risk. Instead of shrimp, you can substitute any seafood high in omega-3 fatty acids; options include salmon, haddock, flounder and sardines.

Cashews
These nuts contain proanthocyanidins, a class of flavanols that actually starve tumors and prevent cancer cells from dividing. In some studies, it’s been shown that eating 12 cashews a day can reduce your colon cancer risk.

Beets
The rich red color of beets actually comes from the cancer-fighting antioxidant betalains. Betalains starve tumors and hinder cell division. Researchers have shown that adding a quarter cup of beets to your daily diet, about 3 or 4 beet slices, can reduce your kidney cancer risk.

Certain foods, eaten in the correct portions and frequency, can provide cancer-starving benefits. Below are 5 foods to eat that can prevent cancer growth:

1.Bok Choy This type of Chinese cabbage contains brassinin; a powerful cancer-fighter, also found in broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Bok Choy should be eaten 3 times a week, in 1/2 cup servings to obtain its full benefits.
2.Cooked Tomatoes have more cancer-fighting properties than raw tomatoes. Both contain the molecule lycopene, but heating the tomato changes its chemical structure and makes the benefits more readily available to your body. You should eat 2-3 (1/2 cup) servings of cooked tomatoes a week.
3.Flounder This fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and low in mercury. Three 6-ounce servings a week is ideal.
4.Strawberries The antioxidants in this berry help fight cancers. You should eat 1 cup a day, including the juice.
5.Artichokes contain 3 different cancer-fighting molecules. Enjoy ¼ cup of hearts per day.

Here is a list of some of the top superfoods and how they affect cancer in humans:

Berries and red grapes – We're talking almost any berry that is red or blue. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, acai berries, gogi berries...they contain phytochemicals that destroy cancer cells both in culture form and in the liver.
Green Tea – The catechins (EGCG) in green tea have anti-cancer properties that prevent and reduce breast and other cancers.
Flaxseed – Contains lignins that have cancer-fighting properties.
Garlic, Onions, Leeks – Just about any part of the allium family has been shown to reduce various types of cancers including stomach and colorectal cancer, prostate and breast cancers, as well as a number of other common cancers.
Broccoli, Broccoli Sprouts, Cruciferous vegetables – Men who eat broccoli 4 times a week have proven that their prostate cancer diminishes. Similar effects have been found when cabbage, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts are eaten. Of note, broccoli sprouts have been shown to demonstrate 20 times the cancer fighting properties of plain broccoli!
Tomatoes – Lycopene is the key ingredient in tomatoes and its benefits are even greater when tomatoes are cooked, so pasta sauces, pizza sauces, etc. are especially good. Studies have identified progress in the areas of prostate, breast, lung, and colon cancer. The FDA is currently disputing these studies (all 72 of them), but most experts believe that the FDA's study is flawed.
Resveratrol found in red wine – Let's hear it for red wine. Resveratrol has been shown to have very powerful cancer-fighting properties which suppresses the abnormal cell growth that leads to many kinds of breast cancer. Resveratrol acts to block the action of estrogen, which is largely responsible for breast cancer. Early studies in lab mice show similar results in prostate cancer. One glass a day should do it.
Watercress, Spinach, Kale – Watercress consumption protects against the kind of DNA damage that leads to tumor formation. Chlorophyllin in spinach and kale has been proven to reduce the risk of liver cancer.
Tumeric – This yellow spice found mainly in Indian curries is curcumin that is considered to be a very powerful antioxidant. It has been proven to prevent and slow tumor growth, and it only takes about 1 teaspoon a day to have an effect. Try adding this to dressings, soups, and your main dishes. A word of warning, if you already have cancer, talk to your doctor before adding tumeric to your diet as it can make your anti-cancer drugs less effective.

Why can't I just take supplements?

** Sorry, but you're going to have to add these foods to your diet. While many of the phytonutrients and chemicals that have been identified in superfoods have been extracted and put into supplement form, scientists are finding that they don't always work quite the same way.
There are numerous reasons for this, but the biggest reason is that while we have identified some of the substances contained in these foods, there are literally thousands of other substances we know exist inside of these foods that have yet to be identified. It is hard to say if we've identified exactly the right components, or if the various components work in a synergistic fashion. In other words, the chemicals work better when they are together. Therefore, if we don't know what they are yet, we can't combine them in a supplement.

One more word of caution: you cannot eat a diet that consists primarily of processed and fast food and expect a cup of berries or green tea to counteract any problems. You must eat a diet of rainbow colored fruits and vegetables on a regular basis for them to have the maximum effect. Mom's right. Eat your vegetables!

Foods That Fight Cancer:

Anti-angiogenesis, the starving of cancers by cutting off its blood supply, now a proven cancer-fighting strategy in cancer clinics supported by a growing body of scientific research, is migrating to the grocery store and farmer’s market. Many healthy foods contain bioactive compounds – specific substances that affect the body in certain ways, such as lowering blood pressure or cholesterol, or mopping up cancer-promoting free oxygen radicals, or inhibiting angiogenesis. In addition to the foods Dr. Oz and I discussed on the show (airing Friday, September 10, 2010), some other good examples of cancer fighting, anti-angiogenesis foods include:
Green tea
Strawberries
Soybeans
Chocolate
Cinnamon

How You Can Eat (and Drink) to Defeat Cancer -

Eating to defeat cancer can be accomplished simply by adding a few anti-angiogenic foods to your meals each day, like those listed above. Like life itself, one’s diet is all about making choices. Since we all eat every day, why not choose foods that can reduce your risk of disease? Listed below are some food facts, supported by scientific research, to help you get the most cancer fighting benefits from your diet.
Be picky. Red Delicious and Granny Smith apples have twice as many cancer fighters as Fuji or Golden Delicious apples. The San Marzano tomato contains more cancer fighters than any other variety. Wine grapes grown in cooler climates have more cancer fighters than grapes grown in warmer climates.
Eat Your Sprouts. Broccoli sprouts can contain more cancer-fighting properties than regular broccoli.
Dunk Your Teabag. Dunking a tea bag up and down releases more cancer-fighting molecules than letting the bag just sit in the cup.
Cook Your Vegetables. Raw tomatoes are good, but cooking them in olive oil is better.
Chew Your Greens. Chewing leafy greens helps to release enzymes that activate cancer-fighting molecules embedded deep in the leaves.
Go Soy. Fermented soy, like the kind used in miso soup, contains four times more cancer fighters than regular soybeans.
Choose one cancer fighting food for each meal. At 3 meals each day, that adds up to more than a thousand of cancer fighting food choices each year.

*Budget Longevity Booster #1: Black Tea
It's basic, old-fashioned and no frills, but black tea is a great source of flavonoids, a potent heart disease and cancer fighter. Don't dilute its healthful properties by adding too much cream or sugar; sip it straight. A 100 count package is less than $5.

*Budget Longevity Booster #2: Ground Flax Seed

Ground flax is a great source of heart- and brain-protecting Omega-3s. It's easy to incorporate ground flax into your diet. You can add it to yogurt, cereals, baked goods, smoothies and much more thanks to its smooth, nutty flavor. It's very important to eat only ground flax; the body cannot digest or absorb the nutrients from whole seeds. A standard bag of ground flax is just $4.

*Budget Longevity Booster #3: Japanese Mushrooms

Whatever variety you choose - enoki, shitake or oyster - rest assured that Japanese mushrooms are a great immunity booster. They are also loaded with ergothioneine, a powerful antioxidant, that does not get destroyed during the cooking process. You can get a carton of each kind all for under $10.

* Budget Immunity Booster #4: Chinese Harmony Balls
Stress management is an important step in adding years to your life. Stress is the #1 ager of the body and its effects can be beyond destructive. It's important to get a handle on stress; one way to achieve this is through meditation. Chinese harmony balls are a good way to zen out. They target acupressure points that stimulate the release of healthy energy, the rhythmic motion can be relaxing, and they produce a gentle vibration and soothing sound. You can find them at Asian specialty stores or online for about $9.

OTHER GOOD FOODS

*Produce Aisle Picks
Cantaloupe - a great source of carotenoids, plant chemicals that act as antioxidants shown to reduce the risk of lung cancer
Kale and cabbage - cruciferous vegetables, like kale and cabbage, are rich in diindolymethane, and might protect against prostate cancer

*Freezer Aisle Pick

Edamame (soybeans) - These cancer-fighting beans contain phytoestrogens, that may help prevent estrogen-driven cancers by binding to estrogen receptors. They are also good for the men of the household since evidence suggests the isoflavones found in soy products may help fight prostate cancer.

*Cereal Aisle Pick

Whole Grain Oats - Oats have the highest proportion of soluble fiber of any grain. Fiber is rich in antioxidants, helps fight colon cancer and phenolic compounds in whole grains my help reduce the risk of certain GI cancers. Dr. Oz's picks in this aisle are cereals high in folate, fiber and/or flaxseed.

*Beverage Aisle Picks

Orange juice - this favorite breakfast beverage is a powerful source of folate which has been linked to lowered risk for GI and pancreatic cancer
Green tea - one of Dr. Oz's favorite drinks, green tea is lower in caffeine than coffee and can help prevent prostate cancer and possibly bladder cancer
Pomegranate juice - this juice is extremely antioxidant-rich and helps prevent colon and prostate cancer
Soy milk - also made from soy beans, soy milk works the same way as edamame to fight cancer

*Household Aisle Picks

Sunscreen - lather on the SPF each and every time you go out in the sun to block exposure to ultraviolet rays
Mop or damp cloth - it's important to get rid of dust without spreading it around your home. Recent evidence has shown that dust can contain the following:
PBDEs - a group of chemicals, one of which is known to be carcinogenic, which come from the inside of damaged furniture (exposing the inner cushioning) and from plastics and TVs
DDT - recent studies have found evidence of DDT in house dust, even though the pesticide was banned in the US in 1972. This carcinogen can remain in carpet and furniture for years after being introduced in your home.
Arsenic - this airborne carcinogen comes from mining, smelting, burning fossil fuels and other industrial processes. Eighty percent of arsenic can be removed by dusting regularly.
